BADGER SIGHTINGS - WHAT THIS GRAPH TELLS US

Number seen at the beginning of each season were very similar to those seen at the end of the last one. So we lose very few over the winter months.
With the exception of 1994, when we had none, the consistent increase between March and June was due to emergence, and increasingly regular sightings, of new cubs from late April.
The consistent decline from June to October reflects natural wastage, which almost all seems to occur in this period.
The difference between new cubs and natural loss is reflected in the gradual increase in numbers at the start of every year, with the exception of 1995 which followed the year without cubs.
